Lonely Cave Kings Often compared to artists such as The Gaslight Anthem, The National, Kurt Vile, and Franz Ferdinand, Lonely Cave Kings are fast up-and-comers with a passion for creativity and a penchant for composing memorable music that will keep your toes tapping while reminding you what nostalgia feels like.

Casinos Casinos are Alex Vevers, Kier-Christer Junos, Zachary Keely, and Mitchell Trainor. A four-piece originally spawned from the hormone-soup that is high school, the members of Casinos know each other very dearly; their beloved project has gained a meaning beyond simply playing shows. This, is where life refreshes itself.

Old Mare Old Mare released Their EP,”YOU DESERVE MORE” in January of 2012. The project sat in the top 10 charts on CIVL for a number of weeks. Old Mare’s sound has expanded since the release and they look forward to sharing it with all their friends at the Battle of the Bands.

Celebrate Canada with National Aboriginal Day! http://blogs2.civl.ca/blog/2011/06/22/celebrate-canada-with-national-aboriginal-day/ http://blogs2.civl.ca/blog/2011/06/22/celebrate-canada-with-national-aboriginal-day/#comments Tue, 21 Jun 2011 21:43:02 +0000 admin http://blogs2.civl.ca/?p=58 Continue reading ]]> June 21st marks the kick off of Celebrate Canada!, an 11 day campaign leading up to Canada Day, starting with National Aboriginal Day, TODAY!

Tune in Thursday Morning between 10-11 am to hear an hour long broadcast from the most recent NCRC in Halifax. A group of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people gathered at CKDU‘s studio to record this Declaration.

Here’s some info on National Aboriginal Day itself.

  • Proclaimed by the Governor General in 1996, National Aboriginal Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the unique achievements of First Nations, Metis and Inuit in fields as diverse as agriculture, the environment, business and the arts.
  • In cooperation with Aboriginal organizations, the Government of Canada chose June 21st for National Aboriginal Day because it is also the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. For generations, many Aboriginal peoples have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day.
  • The Canadian Constitution recognizes three groups of Aboriginal peoples: Indians (First Nations), Inuit and Metis. Although these groups share many similarities, they each have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices and spiritual beliefs.
  • On June 21st, join thousands of Canadians across the country as we celebrate National Aboriginal Day. This is a special day to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples in Canada.
  • A truly nationwide celebration, National Aboriginal Day is part of the Celebrate Canada! program, which also includes Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24), Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27) and Canada Day (July 1).
