Lonely Cave Kings Often compared to artists such as The Gaslight Anthem, The National, Kurt Vile, and Franz Ferdinand, Lonely Cave Kings are fast up-and-comers with a passion for creativity and a penchant for composing memorable music that will keep your toes tapping while reminding you what nostalgia feels like.

Casinos Casinos are Alex Vevers, Kier-Christer Junos, Zachary Keely, and Mitchell Trainor. A four-piece originally spawned from the hormone-soup that is high school, the members of Casinos know each other very dearly; their beloved project has gained a meaning beyond simply playing shows. This, is where life refreshes itself.

Old Mare Old Mare released Their EP,”YOU DESERVE MORE” in January of 2012. The project sat in the top 10 charts on CIVL for a number of weeks. Old Mare’s sound has expanded since the release and they look forward to sharing it with all their friends at the Battle of the Bands.

Chilliwack has a new voice for weekend news on FM radio, and her name is Alicia Williams!

The third year UFV fine arts and communications student got involved in radio by hosting Mood Swings on CIVL.ca in March of 2010.

Maybe you heard her this past weekend, however, doing regular news updates on Saturday and Sunday mornings through the the mid-afternoon on commercial radio for the very first time!

In November, Williams officially became a part of the team at The Hawk 89.5 FM in Chilliwack as a weekend news personality. Williams has been more than just a show host on CIVL, winning a 2011 National Community and Campus Radio Association (NCRA) Award Honourable Mention for Music Programming based on the exclusively Female Content edition of Mood Swings.

She also served as CIVL’s Program Assistant, Music Librarian, and Promotions Coordinator before trying her hand at news for the first time earlier in November. NCRA Executive Director, Shelley Robinson, says “It’s amazing to see someone’s passion for radio get recognized by both a local community and commercial station, and have a chance to reach even more listeners.”

Included among Williams’ other accomplishments at CIVL are her experience as Chair of the Programming Committee, responsible for approving new programs and reviewing concurrent content.

She also participated in CIVL’s national news broadcast of Groundwire, an NCRA project that reaches 30-40 stations across the country every other week. “We are glad to see a dedicated volunteer recognized in the job market,” says CIVL President Dustin Ellis. “Creating broadcast skills and experience is a big part of what we do, and Alicia has helped make this possible for others while making the most of our organization.” Despite the new job, Alicia will read daily news on CIVL at least until the end of this semester.

Alicia showing off CIVL’s 2011 Community Development Award from Halifax’s National Campus and Community Radio Awards, where Williams herself was recognized with an honourable mention in Music Programming for her Fem-Con episode of Mood Swings!

Last year, UFV Student, CIVL’s Alicia Williams was the recipient of an honourable mention at the National Campus and Community Radio Awards, for Music Programming based on her fem-con episode of Mood Swings, as reported in the UFV Cascade here. CIVL also won the Community Development Award!

CIVL is up for several awards this year, and will find out on Friday which Campus and Community Radio Stations are recognized for their excellent work in 2012!

February 15th 2012

RE: CIVL Radio Campaign Focus Group

As you may already know, CIVL Radio will be holding a referendum to increase student fees at the end of March. Our previous campaign and referendum in December was unsuccessful by only 66 out of 854 votes (a margin of 7%). We realize that our posters and advertising for the referendum is in need of improvement. With that in mind, we hope to improve our campaign strategy and hold a successful second referendum.

With an increased budget, CIVL Radio will be able to provide better services for students including:

- Hire more staff members

- Provide incentives for volunteers and students

- Host more events on campus and in the community

- Sponsor community projects/ non-profit organizations

- Invest in new technology and maintain our current equipment

- Fund a new tower with range from Cloverdale to Hope

- Hold more contests and give away prizes

- Create a richer environment on campus and more experiences for students

We will be hosting an open campaign meeting on February 22th at 4:30 pm to generate support for our referendum and to hear any feedback and suggestions. We will meet at CIVL Radio and proceed to a meeting room.

Thank you for showing interest in your award winning campus/community radio station. We hope to see you on February 22nd! There will be some light refreshments. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to kacey_o@hotmail.com.

Sincerely,

Kacey Oravec

CMNS Practicum Student
